Benign Breast Disease

SWELLING OF THE MALE BREAST

The most common breast condition seen in males is swelling of the breast tissue, known as gynaecomastia. It may affect one or both breasts and may be associated with some tenderness.

Breast swelling is seen quite frequently during puberty and will often resolve itself without treatment. Where enlargement persists, surgery maybe considered.

The condition also affects adult males and is most common between the ages of 50 and 80. Adult gynaecomastia may be caused by certain medicines or may occur as a result of a hormone imbalance. A thorough medical history and examination will be carried out to exclude any underlying cause. When no clear cause is found, the condition is known as idiopathic gynaecomastia and treatment is not generally necessary unless symptoms are marked.

Where the cause is drug related, a change of medicine may be possible.
