Breast Cancer

FATIGUE OR TIREDNESS

Many patients who are undergoing or have had radiotherapy, or chemotherapy, or both, for breast cancer feel tired during their treatments and for many weeks after their treatment has finished. This is a normal reaction to the treatment, so try not to feel alarmed if you feel tired and haven't very much energy. Over time your normal energy levels will return as your body gradually recovers. Until your body has fully recovered it is important to try and conserve your energy where you can in order to manage the day to day living activities. The following tips may be helpful.

* Rest when you feel tired especially after treatment.

* Decide which activities make you feel particularly tired, and where possible mobilise your support network ( i.e. family and friends ) to help you.

* Plan your day - if you have more energy in the morning aim to tackle priorities then. Ensure you build rest periods into your day, especially after activity.

* Do some gentle stretching exercises of your muscles. These can be performed sitting or lying down. For example, if sitting in the chair, raise your legs off the ground, point your toes, and stretch your leg muscles until they tighten, do this several times. Similar exercise can be performed with the arms. Gentle exercise has been shown to lessen feelings of tiredness.

* Try and maintain a nutrious diet, with fresh fruit and vegetables. Eat little and often if you can't face a full meal.

* Fatigue can be the result of feeling anxious or depressed. It is important to try and identify your major concerns and talk about them. If you are depressed or anxious talk to your own doctor, or to your breast care nurse.
